Winter Gardening Inside

Winter Gardening for fun

My love of plants and just to see them grow has enticed me to find different ways over the years to enjoy them even when the weather outside is very cold and snow on the ground.

We don’t have a greenhouse and these are just some simple ways to grow some plants inside on your windowsill.

For starters, this year I have been able to grow some green onion tops in my kitchen window.  It makes it really handy to reach up and snip some off for adding to soups, especially tomato soup!

For this I used a small glass bowl added some small rocks and placed the onion bulbs in them.  You need to place the bulbs so that the rocks hold them in place.  Add a little water to the bottom but not touching the bulbs.  It is amazing how quickly they will sprout roots and those roots find the water!!  If you place it where you can keep a good watch over them, just add water as needed.  After a week or so this is what mine looked like.

I have done this with celery also when you cut off the end where the roots are.  Just place it in a small amount of water and after only a few days you will have some green celery starting to grow.  It is also good to add to soups or salads.

This month I started some turnips from cutting off the tops of some roots.  I placed these in a small plastic container with a small amount of water.  Already I have been able to use some of the leaves.

Green Turnip Tops

Maybe it is just me but just seeing things grow is exciting.  Some people throw the green tops of turnips away!  Oh!!  That always makes me sad, they are so good for you and are delicious cooked alone or with the roots.  They contain so many good nutrients like Vitamin A and C.  With them young like these you can also toss them in salads.  They add flavor to soups also.

More to come but I hope you will enjoy growing these and come up with some of your own!!
